Brady was on the front page of the Suburban Life today (2/26/2014)

Brady was very excited to be interviewed and photographed for the Suburban Life story. He was even more excited when I showed him the paper today and he was on the cover and they wrote a story about Shamrockin’ for a Cure! Brady has definitely picked up on the fact that Shamrockin’ is a major priority these days and just assumes Kellene and I are going to a meeting or doing something for Shamrockin’ whenever we leave. He will also make a great manager someday. The other night at dinner he asked me about my day and followed that up with “did you sell anything for Shamrockin’ today?” I look forward to the day when Brady asks me “can you believe we did it? Can you believe we found a cure for CF? What are we doing next dad?”

We are very excited to see everyone March 7th!

The night will feature bag pipers, Irish dancers, drinks, dinner and more. With a live band, the famous Pot of Gold raffle and a premium silent auction, Irish eyes will definitely be smiling on this unforgettable night!

Back to Kicking CF’s Butt…

13 Feb

Thank you so much for all of your thoughts and prayers! Brady is home and so very excited to be with his brother Quinn again!

Brady was/is a complete rock star! He spent 5 nights and 5 days in isolation in a small hospital room while already suffering from some major cabin fever…and he did great! We are lucky to be in a city with such amazing hospitals to choose from and Lurie Children’s Hospital is incredible…don’t go running out to visit anytime soon but please take my word for it!

We have a couple of weeks remaining with IV’s at home and then he will likely have even more antibiotics to continue when the IV is done. Brady’s CT Scan showed severe sinus blockage which can be common in CF kids, and they attribute to the migraine headaches that were knocking Brady out of commission for a couple of hours every day. CF makes it very difficult for things to move freely throughout the body and this is one of those CF-related “conditions” we never considered for some reason. We continue to learn that when there is even the slightest percentage of likelihood that something is possible, it most likely will be a condition we get to experience.

We have a long road ahead of us as Kellene and I do our best to maintain the care Brady was getting in the hospital. Changing the IV’s isn’t so bad, but it really sucks that CF can do this to Brady and 30,000+ families across the country who can also relate…CF SUCKS! Brady is seriously invested in kicking CF’s butt and I have never felt better about supporting someone! He made the best of the situation while in the hospital and left all of his nurses and most everyone on our floor with Valentine’s Day cards and his very own artwork he was “selling” for FREE by the time we left. I have already been working with him on his business plan and figure we should have it sorted out in time for the Cure Found Party so please help me accelerate that timeline!

We hope to see you all at Shamrockin’ for a Cure 2014 on March 7th. In addition to live music, bag pipers and Irish dancers we are expecting to have the St Patrick’s Day Queen and her court in attendance too! There will be plenty of entertainment throughout the night and we hope to see you there!

The streak is over…for now!

8 Feb

We have really enjoyed a long streak of staying healthy and hospital-free since Labor Day 2012.  But after fighting a persistent cough, crippling headaches and random fevers for the past 2 months, Brady has been admitted at Lurie Children’s Hospital for what is likely to be a “CF tune-up” to give him heavy doses of IV antibiotics to knock out whatever has been causing these issues.  Brady is still maintaining his streak of baffling doctors and keeping everyone on their toes as they try to diagnose his symptoms, but the good news is that his CT scan and chest X-Rays look good!

Brady is still 100% focused on kicking CF’s butt and I am 100% certain he will prevail!  As is usual for Brady, he has been extremely courageous and brave throughout all of the poking and prodding for the various tests.   The word has spread rather quickly and we thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers to help Brady fight even stronger than ever!

Thank You!
Matt, Kellene, Brady & Quinn

Shamrockin’ for a Cure 2014 is right around the corner…we expect to have Brady back to 100% in time for the big event!

Happy Halloween Team O’Connell!

It has been awhile since we have posted and we have updates to share!  Brady has been hospital-free for 1 year!  Cystic Fibrosis is a disease that can literally rear it’s ugly head and Brady can get sick in an instant.  After multiple hospital stays over the first 3 years, we are incredibly thankful for a healthy run and will continue to do our best to keep Brady healthy during the winter season (cold and flu).

We have been busy planning the second annual Shamrockin’ for a Cure and we are excited for another great event and night out with our wonderful network of family and friends.  SAVE THE DATE:

Endurance for a CURE!

25 Apr

Exercise does the body good…and while we know it to be true, it is still much easier said than done! Exercise is especially important for those with Cystic Fibrosis to stimulate their lungs and keep them clean from mucus buildup and infection. Brady’s lungs are still very healthy, aside from chronic Pseudomonas diagnoses, and our goal is to keep his lung function as close to 100% as possible. We know CF can rear its’ ugly head without warning and change things for us pretty quickly and we know the odds of that happening are far less if we keep Brady active (not very hard to do) and encourage him to constantly stimulate his lungs. We have actually experienced Brady wanting to exercise to help him feel better and we learned that he knew it would make him cough which would ultimately make him feel refreshed.
Exercise for me is much easier said than done, but we have amazing friends who have completed endurance events (Triathlon, Marathon, Stair Climb, Shamrock Shuffle, Bike Ride) to promote awareness and raise money for funding critical research for making CF stand for Cure Found! This year our dear friend Ted McNabb is competing in IRONMAN Lake Placid and since the race isn’t enough of a challenge for him, he has pledged to raise $25,000 and match every dollar donated up to $25,000 for a total pledge worth $50,000.
Please donate here to support Ted and to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis:

IRONMAN Lake Placid is the longest-running American event aside from the IRONMAN World Championship Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Located in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, it’s an accessible event for every athlete’s bucket list.
